Reno is the largest city in Northern Nevada. Located in the southern part of Washoe County, Reno is nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area called the Truckee Meadows. With Lake Tahoe only a short drive away, Reno provides plenty of indoor and outdoor recreational activities year-round. In the winter, you will find the largest concentration of ski areas and ski facilities in the world. The rest of the year, you are able to go biking, camping, hiking, fishing and mountain climbing all within a 30 minute drive of Reno.

~ History of Reno
Reno began when Charles William Fuller arrived in the Truckee Meadows in 1859. By early 1860, he constructed a small bridge and small hotel. This became known as Fuller's Crossing. The next year, Fuller sold his bridge and hotel to Myron C Lake, who renamed the spot Lake's Crossing and started charging a toll for the bridge. This crossing became an important part of one of the main routes between northern California and the silver mines of Virginia City and the Comstock Lode.
In 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad (later renamed Union Railroad) made an agreement with Myron C Lake to allow their railroad tracks to cross through his land. A new town was laid out and ownership was divided between Lake and the railroad. Almost overnight, buildings began to appear on the new town site and it was named Reno in honor of General Jesse Lee Reno, a Union army officer killed during the Civil War.
In 1871, the Nevada State Legislature moved the county seat of Washoe County to Reno. One year later, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad extended their line there. Reno soon became an important commercial center on the transcontinental railroad and a transfer point for the vast wealth coming from the Comstock Lode. The University of Nevada was moved from Elko to Reno in 1885.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Reno began to gain notoriety when a number of famous people obtained divorces under Nevada's more lenient laws, something that was almost unheard of at that time. After casino gambling was legalized in 1931, Reno began filling with gambling establishments, beginning the profitable tourism industry that remains in Reno today.
In addition to the gambling industry, Reno continues to be an important transportation hub for the western United States. City leaders have recognized this and have created aggressive expansion plans that include a railroad system that is expected to increase travel in the Reno area as well as a boom in construction. There is a thriving cultural scene in modern day Reno, a refurbished downtown area and an increase in year round resort tourism.

The public school system in Reno is serviced by the Washoe County School District. It is comprised of 38 elementary schools, 13 middle schools and 12 high schools. In addition, there are 30 private schools to choose from.
For higher education, there are several colleges and universities located in Reno. Morrison University offers comprehensive degree programs in accounting, management and computer science. The University of Phoenix - Northern Nevada campus is located in Reno. The Truckee Meadows Community College is a 2 year public school that offers Associate degree programs. The University of Nevada - Reno is a 4-year public university that offers Bachelor's, Doctor's, Master's and post-Master's certificate programs. There are also several technical colleges in the area to choose from, such as: Career Choices, Career College of Northern Nevada, Center for Employment Training, Join, Nevada School of Insurance and Real Estate, Northern Nevada Beauty Academy, Ralston School of Massage, Reno Professional Bartending School, Reno Tahoe Job Training Academy, Unlimited Horizons School of Travel and Western Truck School. |
